The Southwest 9-Ball Challenge once again provided a weekend of fun and excitement for APA members in this part of the country.  One hundred eight teams (sixteen from our area) battled it out over two days for a total purse of more than $11,000!

With the main event set to start bright and early Friday morning, everyone made sure to be there early Thursday evening to register their teams and get in some practice.  We set up forty tables in the Riviera convention center, and kept them all busy Thursday night!

The spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship was evident throughout the weekend.  That's really the whole idea behind the Southwest Challenge - a fun-filled weekend of pool, making new friends, and reuniting with friends made in previous years.

The South Coast teams made a great showing in the event.  Finishing seventeenth ($120) was the team of Nancy McKinney, Danny Manis, and Jack Swisher.  Tied for ninth ($240) was the trio of Pam Sheets, Ron Sheets, and Sharry Watt, while Annie Claborn, Alan Jenkins, and John Hill took fifth ($450).

The story of Saturday evening though was the all South Coast finals, pitting the trio of Jenn Kadin, Ed Poplet, and Matt Munowitch from Thousand Oaks against Nick Adams, Kevin Bradley, and Chris Stevens from Ojai.  The unique rotating roster format of the Southwest Challenge played a big factor in the outcome, with the group from Ojai getting favorable matchups to bring home the Championship trophy and a cool $2,400.  Congratulations!  The runners-up didn't fare too badly either, earning $1,500 for their excellent finish!

Next year's tournament will be even bigger, there's no doubt about it!
